When installing a stair lift, the track must be cut to the proper length. Most manufacturers supply two stock pieces of track 92″ long that require cutting for your specific installation. When calculating how much track you need, it is important to remember to add the correct amount of overhang at the top landing. Each manufacturer and stairlift model has different requirements for track length. Some models may require an additional 10″-12″ overhang at the top landing. Cutting the track is an extremely important step in the installation process, a wrong cut or incorrect measurement can make the track unusable. Cutting a stair lift track is a process that must be precise and to the manufacturer’s specifications.
How we Cut Aluminum Track
We’re often asked how we cut the aluminum track, and the answer is with a miter saw, a high tooth count carbide saw blade, and safety procedures. Cutting a stair lift track is a process that requires attention to detail and safety, it is always recommended a professional stairlift company cut the track. After we measure the stairs and add the required overhang our first step is to set up our miter saw, We use a 12″ blade to get a clean cut in one pass. The end of the track should be a smooth square cut for rail trim covers.
Blades (Non-Ferrous)
Before connecting the power we’ll check the blade to make sure its in good condition. The blade we use is a 12″ – 96 tooth carbide tipped blade made for non ferrous metals. The blade is NOT made for hard metals like steel. The gear rack will need to be removed and cut separately with a grinder.
